I don't think there is a definition for what makes a painting successful, I think it depends on everyone and their preferences. To me, I enjoy paintings with a lot of color. Also, when I can tell the artist put a lot of time and work into it, I appreciate their piece. I don't think I have ever seen a painting I didn't like, I just think some I prefer other other based on techniques they used. I like paintings that make you look a second time.
