Charlee Impressionism

This painting is the Cliffs at Etretat by Claude Monet in 1886. This art movement, taking place from the 1860s-1920s, was based on capturing a moment based on the artist's feelings rather than a realistic approach. This style emphasizes loose brushstrokes and focuses on lighting. The artists of this time wanted to rebel against traditional ways of painting. Some notable artists from this period were Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, and many more. The Franco-Prussian War and the renovation of Paris after the war influenced many artists to turn to impressionism to paint moments/feelings.

  1. My movement is fauvism which came during the impressionist period from 1905-1910. Henri Matisse studied impressionism before moving to fauvism. Fauvism greatly surprised the critics at the time probably because impressionism emphasizes light and movement while fauvism is very bold and has many colors applied straight from the tube. People were more used to impressionism at that time.

  2. My movement, Art Nouveau, occurred from 1890-1910, which is just around the same time as yours. Just as yours, my movement worked to stray from traditional and classical ways of painting. Your paintings seem more realistic then mine because paintings from my period were almost collage like, whereas your paintings was a scene. Both of the paintings we picked out are based on nature as well!

  3. My movement is pop art, which which happened 30 years after yours ended. In both of our movements, the artist wanted to stray away from the traditional style of painting. Your movement involves a lot of landscapes and paintings of day to day life; my movement depicted random items with fun comic book style art.
