This piece is Starry Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh created in 1889. The characteristics of this era were that artists used vivid colors, more emotion than realism, and used thick coats of paint. Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse were key artists. Some events that were happening during this era was the creation of the airplane, and Alexander Graham Bell created the telephone.
I love the sense of swirling movement in this painting. One of my favorite art collections is the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia-but I was shocked to learn that Albert Barnes passed on the opportunity to buy this painting, and it now resides in the MoMA in New York City. This is one of my favorite van Gogh quotes about painting:
ReplyDelete""I can't work without a model. I won't say I turn my back on nature ruthlessly in order to turn a study into a picture, arranging the colors, enlarging and simplifying; but in the matter of form I am too afraid of departing from the possible and the true." -van Gogh
