The Son of Man
by: René Magritte
The Son of Man is one of my favorite paintings because it captures a surreal image of a strange character. While it seems as though we do not know who this person is, the artist intended it to be a self-portrait. The apple in front of his face represents all that we see, and how what is visible covers what is hidden. This leaves the viewer with a sense of curiosity for what is behind the apple, something we will never know.
