Still Life Painting by Rachel Ruysch

A painting good/successful can be identified & spotted when it is compared to other paintings, but I think organization and color choices are also crucial for a unique painting. In Flowers in a Glass Vase, with a Cricket in a Niche, Ruysch broke the tradition of symmetry and elevated her flower paintings to another level. she used a variety of bright colors for the flowers, which successfully contrasted from the dark background. The blue flower near the center also added a pop to the entire painting because the surroundings are all warm colors.

  1. I agree, especially about the color choices. I feel like if there is bad color choice, it can throw off the balance of a painting.

  2. I agree, organization is important in a good painting but I also feel that in abstract pieces there can be an organized chaos which also could be a good painting.
