What makes a “good” or successful painting?
I think a good or successful painting is when the artist is happy with what they have created. Once an artist believes their work is satisfactory it does not matter if someone thinks it is bad because only the artist knows how much time, effort, love, and skill went into the piece. I believe that it is hard to judge if a painting is good or successful when you base your judgment on how realistic or photographic it looks. Two paintings I believe are good and successful are:
Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird - by Frida Kahlo
Kahlo was satisfied with her work and used her paintings as an escape when she was sick and bedridden. Many people might not like how this self-portrait looks, but she was happy with how she looked and how her paintings looked.
Seated Women - Pablo Picasso
In Picasso's time, many other artists and critics did not like how Picasso painted. Picasso commonly painted distorted faces that are foreign to reality, unlike what was being painted at the time. Despite his work being disliked, Picasso continued to paint what made him feel satisfied and now is known as one of the greatest artists of all time.

ReplyDeleteI agree that the artist should be happy and proud of what they created because it's their painting and they can do whatever they want
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that a successful painting is one that the artist is satisfied with.

ReplyDeleteI agree that a successful painting is one that the artist is happy with, as the piece is their own self expression. I also think that the most important opinion is the artist that created the painting, but whether it is good or bad to someone else is very subjective. I think that both Picasso’s and Kahlo’s pieces follow your guidelines of a good painting because they both were very unique and created to satisfy themselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the artist determines the quality of the work.
