Introducing Helen Frankenthaler, by Alex Starnes

Helen Frankenthaler was born on December 12, 1928. She was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. Frankenthaler expressed herself through an abstract style of painting. She was a part of the "lyrical abstract" period. A technique she used was the color-stain technique, which involved applying thin washes of paint to an unprimed canvas. A small part of Frankenthaler's art included ceramics, and she made various sculptures. Helen once said, "I'd rather risk an ugly surprise than rely on things I know I can do". This is inspirational because it encourages us to choose to take new risks over do things we already know we can do.

Some of Helen Frankenthaler's work:

"Mountains and Sea",1952, oil paint

"Cedar Hill", 1983, woodcut

"Provincetown", 1964, oil paint
