Introducing Yayoi Kusama, by Lindsey Renshaw

Yayoi Kusama was born on March 22, 1929 in Japan, but she has lived in the US for most of her life.

Kusamatrix, 2004, environmental installation (lights, mirrors, plastic)

All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, 2016, environmental installation (wood, mirrors, plastic, glass and LEDs)

Infinity Mirrored Room--Love Forever, 1966/1994, environmental installation (wood, mirrors, metal, lightbulbs)

Yayoi Kusama is a 91 year old female artist that is best known for her use of polka dots in large installation sculptures. She uses repetition to explore the psychological influence art can have. Kusama is associated with Pop Art and Minimalism art movements. She often explores themes of freedom and expression through the use of bright colors. I find it interesting that every single one of her artwork pieces contains polka dots.

Quotes: "With just one polka dot, nothing can be achieved."

"Accumulation is the result of my obsession and that philosophy is the main theme of my art. Accumulation means the stars in the universe don’t exist by themselves nor does the earth exist by itself. It is just like when I saw the flowers everywhere and when I chased them, I felt panicked and so overwhelmed that I wanted to eat them all."

  1. I love Yayoi so much! Her creativity and unique sense of innovation are out of the world. It's great to see an Asian woman being featured, too.
