Complementary Color Schemes (Blue & Yellow)
Johannes Vermeer, ‘The Milkmaid’, 1658-1660
Dutch painter Vermeer paints a casual day-to-day activity of people in his life. He uses mainly yellow to create a bright scene while using dark blue/green to create depth and shadows.
William Merritt Chase, 'At the Seaside', 1892
American painter Chase depicts in his painting a leisure day at the beach by using varying shades of blue to paint the expansive skyline and ocean while contrasting it with spots of bright yellow and red to make the umbrellas stand out.
For the Vermeer painting, its cool how he uses the contrasting colors to create the shadows in his work it makes it look very realistic.
