Charlee's Response

What makes a “good” or successful painting? AND post a photo of a painting you believe meets your own criteria for “good” or “successful” painting.

I think every painting can be considered a "good" painting. Also, I think it depends on what the viewer's preferences are. I like paintings that catch my attention by speaking to me in a certain way. I think paintings are successful when the viewer can interpret their own message or story from it. These are two paintings I found at the Philadelphia Art Museum. There were a lot of great works of art there but these two really stood out to me. I like the painting style of the first one and how the women's eyes look. Her eyes kind of look dead while she wears a fancy hat and clothes. The second one I like because I interpreted it as him indulging in alcohol while lonely with his cat, writing a letter to someone he's in love with. I love interpreting stories from art.

  1. I like the idea that art depends on personal preference. Both these pieces are very abstract and bring a lot of unique messages to the audience.
