Julie Mehretu was born in 1970 and is 51 years old. She was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, then she moved to Michigan then New York.

She uses acrylic paint to make large gestural artwork. She builds layers of paint then adds oils, pencils, pens, and ink to create an image. She is considered a contemporary artist. She is associated with futurism and suprematism.
