Gildea Food Painting - Detweiler Elements of Art Description

In Gabby's birthday cake painting, she creates texture by using either modeling paste or thick layers of paint to create a realistic looking icing. She also shows the element of color by using a lime green to contrast against the dark brown and create value in the painting by using different shades of brown to show shading on the cake. Finally, she shows form by using real candles to create the 3d effect on the cake that makes this painting go above and beyond.

Mandy Jiang Food Painting- Beyonce Hu Elements of Art Description

In Mandy Jiang's food painting, she creates texture by incorporating a pop out paper/plastic ribbon as green onions. The shading of the bowl creates the element of space around the ramen to capture the attention of the viewer to the middle of the painting. Also, she uses various contrasting colors to provide a sense of balance between the bright yellows and pinks and the shadowy mushrooms. Lastly, the artist highlighted the vegetables and soup with white paint to create value and showcase the direction where the light is coming from.

Mandy Jiang Food Painting - Benson Elements of Art Description

In Mandy's Food Painting she took advantage of the broad color scheme to add texture and dimension to her painting. The variety of colors adds to the overall theme of the artwork through adding value and perspective. Mandy makes use of the space in her painting making the food the center of the piece and emphasizing the circular background to draw the viewers attention to the food. Mandy also uses a lot of lines In this painting, specifically to show highlights and value.

Gabriella Gildea Food painting - Dai elements of Art description

In her food painting, Gabriella created a sense of texture by adding modeling paint with brushstrokes onto the cake, which demonstrated the uneven edge of the surface. the different colors and values between the light green background and blue plate communicate to bring out the dark brown colored cake in the center, making it more "eye-catching". Furthermore, the use of real candles and the flames assembled by similar colored shapes are very well done because it is not only a complementary color to the background but also makes the overall painting looks more 3D.

Caroline's food painting- cassie elements of art vocabulary async

In Caroline's food painting, she used a variety of techniques to create the texture of chicken, vegetables, and egg to create a realistic aspect of this painting. It has been proven that she used small brushes to create a more detail-oriented piece through her use of lines in the egg to make it look more three-dimensional. To elaborate on this, she used modeling paint for a more realistic look on the eggs. Also, it looks like she used a sponge to create a look of black pepper on the chicken, creating unique values, unlike anyone else's painting. Overall, her use of detail and form-based in her color techniques is very well done.

Mandy's Food Painting - Gildea Elements of Art Description

In this piece, there is a great variety of color used from bright greens to yellow, red and brown. A sense of space is created with the circular shape of bowl, creating depth as the viewer "looks down" into the painting. There are darker values of color as seen inside the bowl with the painting of the food, and there are lighter values on the rim of the bowl. The texture of this painting is enhanced with small green pieces of vegetable which make the painting 3D.

Alex MacWilliams Food Panting- Henry Weinig Elements of Art Description

In Alex MacWilliams painting of a delicious looking milkshake, he uses value to show the different colors and brightnesses of the different areas of the milkshake. He does so by blending the different lights and dark browns to create a beautiful looking masterpiece. Next, Alex shows texture, by using modeling paste to give some 3d effects to the whipped cream. Alex then uses color in the background of his painting to accent the blue and yellow colors of nWest Virginia University, the college portrayed on the front of his cup. Lastly, Alex uses shape to give roundness to his perfectly places cherry on top which really compliments the rest of the painting well as it is on the other side of the color wheel.

Cassie's Food Painting- Caroline's Elements of Art Description

In Cassie's food painting, she creates a sense of texture by what it looks like using a sponge to apply light and dark tones on the bread. She also uses texture on the table by using diagonal brush strokes. I can also see the different colors that she chose for the table, bread, and plate. By using light and dark shades of the same color, it makes the painting more pleasing to look at and shows that the light source is coming from the corners. On the bread, she used dark lines to make it look more realistic. On the plate, she used different values to show the shadow coming from the bread, which is why the middle of the plate is gray and the edges are white.

Henry Weinig's Food Painting - Alex Starnes Elements of Art Description

In Henry's painting of a Granny Smith apple, he created a primary sense of form by giving the apple a 3D shape. He performed this by making the brush strokes seem as if they go back around the apple, and he depicted different lighting and shading on the apple. The lighting comes from the top left of the painting, and he made a cast shadow on the bottom right. He made the apple take up most of the space on the canvas, as well as the grapes. The background of his painting consists of multi-color lines that provide a solid surface for the apple to sit on. These colors create a perfect description of the apple, the grapes, and the table lying underneath. The texture of the apple makes it seem more realistic. Henry did a good job of making it seem smooth and rounded. The table underneath also seems smooth. In conclusion, Henry did a good job of using different elemental descriptions of art to make his Granny Smith apple painting more realistic and varied.

Abby Garcia Food Painting - Alex MacWilliams Elements of Art Description

Here Abby used numerous different types of elements.  The shape of her tomatoes varies in size and roundness to help build a realistic picture. Abby's color of the the tomatoes also varies with some lighter and darker shades of red which also helps it make it realistic. Abby also used the element of form because she built depth by painting some vertically and some under one another. She even created texture because of how she identified the white points on the tomatoes.

Alex Starnes Food Painting - Abby Garcia Elements of Art Description ASYNC

In Alex's peach painting, he uses a stippling technique to create a sense of texture in the background.  Additionally, he uses light and dark shades to develop value in the painting.  The varying color of the peach is displayed through the use of yellow, orange, and red.  The shadow on the surface below the peach  presents an element of space to the painting.

Chichi Food painting - Jiang Elements of Art Description

In her food painting of the donuts, Chichi creates a sense of texture by incorporating modeling paint in thick brushstrokes to mimic the texture of the chocolate frosting and using gloss medium to create a glossy, shiny finish to the donuts. A sense of space, depth, and perspective is created by the fact the donuts in the back are drawn smaller than the ones on the foreground; the incorporation of the dunkin box cutout also introduces a sense of space, layer, and realism. The painting has vibrant colors as evident in the sprinkles, and the 3D forms of the desserts are communicated well through the highlights and shadows.

Renshaw Food painting- Vakili elements of art description

In Lindsey's food painting, She used her colors and paint to create shapes. These shapes, the avocados, look very realistic and accurately portray the food. The shape of the plate and the details on the plate add to the painting and make it appealing to look at. She used value to emphasize the shadows on the painting. The toast is darker on the outsides and the plate has darker and lighter areas. This creates a three dimensional effect and makes the food look really good. She used space extremely well. The negative space is used to emphasize the plate, and the negative space on the plate emphasizes the avocado and toast. The painting is centered and looks symmetrical. Lindsey has black dots to add texture. The black dots are on top of the avocado making it pop out. She used modeling paste to create white cheese that adds texture to the painting.

Katie Benson Food Painting - Chichi Elements of Art Description

In Katie's painting, she creates texture to the ice cream with rough pats on the canvas to imply that the ice cream is being eaten. She uses value in every area in her painting to give the viewer location of the light source which is on the right side. She also incorporates value in the back with the castle by blurring it. The shapes are very precise and sharp and show both explicit and implied lines, and the form of the ice cream and the cup, which completes the shape, takes up most of the space in the painting, and the blurred castle implies or makes it look like there is space. The different colors used gives the painting a sense of where the light source is, and it gives the painting a contrasting look with the use of complementary colors.

Vakili Food Painting - Renshaw Elements of Art Description

In Sydney's food painting, she used different values of tan and brown to achieve a three dimensional appearance in the waffles. She added a fluffy texture on the whipped cream by placing a large amount of modeling paste in a sweeping motion. Sydney recognized the tendency of the color white to reflect the colors of its surroundings. She accomplished this use of color by adding blue to the whipped cream, which also created a sense of unity with the background. The perspective of the painting is that we are looking down on the dish, which is seen through the various positions of the whipped cream and what direction it is facing. Sydney used a green line on the border of the plate to give the piece a sense of three dimensionality and realism. Also, the shadow located in the front of the plate is purple which adds continuity with the pastel theme.

ASYNC Post-Using the Elements of Art Vocabulary in Discussing/Describing Paintings

ASYNC Post-Using the Elements of Art Vocabulary in Discussing/Describing Paintings

Due Sunday 3/28 by 8pm

  1. Choose one of your peer’s Food Painting Projects posted to the blog.

  2. Create a new post titled “(Your Peer’s Name) Food painting-(Your Name) Elements of Art Description”

3. Then, describe the painting using the Elements of Art vocabulary listed below. Make sure to use at least 4 of the “Elements of Art” vocabulary words below, more is better!

See my example beneath for Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings.

Mrs. Silverman’s example “ASYNC” post for Peer Food painting using Elements of Art Vocabulary:

In Wayne Thiebaud’s “Dessert Tray” painting (1992-1994), the artist creates a sense of texture by applying the paint in thick, directional brush strokes. The object’s edges are reinforced with layered, multi-colored contour lines (evident on the rim of the plate). A sense of space and depth is created by the elliptical shape of the plate, which gives a sense of receding space and a foreshortened effect of the circular plate. Each dessert has a clear sense of three-dimensional form, which is communicated with different values or areas of light and dark on the object’s surface. The different colors and values used on the objects also communicate a strong sense of directional light. Cast shadows from the objects indicate that the light source is coming from the bottom right of the picture plane.
